Renaissance Classic Sports Cars are pleased to present this fantastic example of a Caterham Seven 420R SV.
Originally created by the great race engineer Colin Chapman back in the late 1950’s, the aim was to create a race car that could be used on the road. Using a simple steel frame and hand rolled aluminium panels, he wanted the finished product to only have the bare driving essentials in order to keep weight and production costs down as much as possible. With external features similar to that of the Lotus Mark IV and a steel frame comparable to the limited run Lotus 11, this car’s model name was resurrected from a previously abandoned project and the “Seven” was born.
Due to popularity with road users and club level racers, the Seven went through a couple of iterations with Lotus before the design rights were sold-off to Graham Nearn of “Caterham Cars” in 1973. Now, Over 60’s since its initial design, the Seven remains relatively unchanged; with the exclusion to technological, safety and performance improvements that have occurred over the years, the new Caterham models have undeniable similarities in appearance and driving characteristics to their original predecessors. Most motoring journalists and aficionados still suggest and consider the Caterham Seven as a vehicle that should be experienced, at least once, by any true car enthusiast.
The “420” is the penultimate model in the current Caterham range. Powered by a naturally aspirated 2.0 litre inline 4 Ford Duratec engine, that produces 210bhp and almost 160lbft of torque, the car boasts an incredible power-to-weight ratio of nearly 400bhp per tonne! With a claimed 0-60 time of sub 4seconds and absolutely no electronic driver aids - it is an undeniably fast car designed for the experienced automotive thrill seeker.
This particular example comes with the more popular and performance orientated “R” pack which includes improved suspension and drivetrain components. This car also benefits from the larger “SV” chassis which makes it more suitable for larger drivers or touring use due to the increased cabin space. A summary of the vehicle’s specification has been listed below:
- Ford 2.0 Duratec (210bhp)
- 5 speed manual gearbox
- Limited slip differential
- Wide track front wishbones
- Height adjustable suspension
- 15” Orcus alloy wheels
- Uprated brake master cylinder
- Track day roll bar
